Dignity, Culture, and Climate: Local Action by Women in the Wild

Women in the Wild is a grassroots organization led by Indigenous Maasai women in Transmara, Kenya. Operating within the Maasai Mara ecosystem, the organization uplifts women and girls who are disproportionately impacted by climate change, displacement, and gender inequality. As droughts erode cultural traditions and displace pastoralist families, Women in the Wild is reclaiming space for women as climate justice leaders and cultural stewards through mentorship, storytelling, and land-based healing practices.

Why Women in the Wild ?

With CJRF funding, Women in the Wild will implement a two-year project to address non-economic loss and damage (NELD) through the preservation of Indigenous knowledge, psychosocial support, and gender-responsive climate governance. The initiative includes healing circles, intergenerational dialogues, cultural documentation, eco-tourism, and the establishment of women-led resilience hubs. CJRF is proud to support Women in the Wild for its visionary work restoring dignity, voice, and cultural identity to communities navigating climate impacts in one of East Africa’s most ecologically and culturally important regions.
