Through a Disability Justice Lens: Building Resilience Amid Climate Change

Action Network for the Disabled (ANDY) is a national disability rights organization based in Nairobi County in Kenya . As a Disabled Persons’ Organization (DPO), ANDY is led by persons with disabilities and works to dismantle systemic barriers in education, health, livelihoods, and climate action. In Kisumu’s flood- and drought-prone sub-counties of Nyando and Kadibo, persons with disabilities face compounding harms during climate disasters—ranging from displacement and mobility challenges to deepened social isolation and mental health trauma. ANDY is one of the few organizations in the region addressing climate change through a disability justice lens.

Why Action Network for the Disabled?

With CJRF’s support, ANDY will implement a two-year initiative to address the non-economic loss and damage (NELD) experienced by persons with disabilities. The project includes restoring lost livelihoods, delivering trauma-informed health and psychosocial services, developing disability-inclusive early warning systems, and advancing policy advocacy to integrate disability rights into local climate resilience planning. CJRF is proud to support ANDY’s visionary, community-led work, which centers dignity, agency, and inclusion for people too often left out of climate conversations.
