A Learning Community at the Intersection of Environmental, Gender, and Climate Justice
Learning from other regranters and funders helps CJRF explore innovative ways to drive our own climate justice funding forward. In 2019, CJRF joined a peer-led group—spearheaded by Global Greengrants Fund, Prospera, the Ford Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation—to learn how environmental and gender justice intersect. Since then, the Funder Learning and Action Co-Laboratory on Gender, Environmental and Climate Justice (FLAC) has become a vibrant community of practice of funders and grassroots activists. Monthly meetings allow members to recognize and fill gaps in knowledge, review assumptions, revise methods, and put learning into practice for funding this intersection.
In 2023, CJRF granted FLAC $50,000 USD to support its strategic growth and core operations. Supporting FLAC allows the organization to develop a transformational learning framework; establish values, practices and structures needed to share decision-making power with activists and grassroot leaders; and elevate the importance of funding at the intersection of gender, climate, and environmental justice.

Why FLAC?
Our ongoing participation in FLAC allows CJRF to continue learning from and influencing the field of philanthropy on climate justice and gender. In particular, FLAC offers a space to learn about participatory governance, while sharing CJRF’s own transition into participatory philanthropy with other funders.
