Disabled Women Leading Climate Justice in Busoga

Integrated Disabled Women Activities (IDIWA) is a Ugandan women-led organization of persons with disabilities working at the forefront of climate justice, gender equity, and disability rights. Founded and led by women with disabilities, IDIWA operates in the Busoga sub-region of Eastern Uganda—an area facing increasing land degradation, food insecurity, and displacement due to climate change. In this context, women and girls with disabilities (WGDs) are often excluded from household decisions and community resilience strategies. IDIWA challenges both gendered and ableist power structures to elevate WGDs as climate leaders.

Why Integrated Disabled Women Activities ?

With CJRF support, IDIWA will implement a two-year project focused on climate-smart agriculture, policy advocacy, and trauma-informed care. Activities include establishing inclusive farming cooperatives, training WGDs on land rights and sustainable livelihoods, and creating platforms for their participation in disaster and climate planning committees. The project will also provide emergency GBV response services for WGD survivors of climate-induced violence. CJRF is proud to support IDIWA’s bold, intersectional work to ensure WGDs are not only protected but empowered as agents of transformation in climate-affected communities.
