Bridging Traditional Knowledge and Conservation Governance
Traditional Ecosystems Survival Tanzania (TEST) is an Indigenous-led NGO established in 2019 with a mission to facilitate effective collaborations that reduce conflict, improve natural resource management, and enhance the sustainable wellbeing of local people, livestock and wildlife in Tanzania’s natural ecosystems.
TEST is deeply integrated in the Maasai communities of Northern Tanzania - with all the leadership team and staff being Maasai themselves, they place value on the rich and diverse knowledge of their ancestors and elders and hold a profound understanding of traditional ecological knowledge alongside the region’s challenges and opportunities. Through collaborative research, they bridge the gap between Indigenous and scientific worlds of conservation.

Why TEST?
TEST is advancing a participatory model of conservation that centers Indigenous leadership and lived experience. Their work responds directly to community-identified needs, integrating traditional ecological knowledge with legal advocacy and governance strategies. Through documenting pastoralist conservation practices, advancing land rights, and fostering inclusive governance spaces, TEST is helping to preserve cultural knowledge while challenging dominant conservation models. Their work ensures that Indigenous communities are not just participants, but decision-makers in shaping the policies that affect their territories and futures.
