Legal Empowerment Around the Globe
Namati is a leader in supporting communities to understand and claim their legal rights. Drawing on work in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Myanmar, India, and the US, Namati will build a powerful, grassroots movement to put impacted communities at the center of decision making about land and environmental issues where they live. We have awarded Namati $200,000, building from an existing grant, to support the launch.
This new global movement will seek to change the systems for how community voices are included in decision making about development while giving communities the resources they need to know, use, and shape the law that governs the land and environment where they live. Namati is starting this work by convening leading staff from grassroots environmental justice organizations to set an agenda for shared learning and collective advocacy.
Working together, this new movement expects to:
Increase the number of communities that are able to use grassroots land and environmental justice to change the environmental outcomes where they live
Deepen the practice of organizations involved in this work so that they can be more effective and sustainable
Reinforce and protect each other’s work
Create change in national and global systems that reflect the demands of impacted communities for a more equitable and sustainable path forward
CJRF is also supporting the next phase of the Community Land Protection program in Kenya with an additional grant of $100,000. Check out more on Namati’s work in East Africa.

Why Namati?
Namati advances social and environmental justice by building a movement of people to know, use, and shape the law. Namati works in partnership with local civil society organizations in six countries to train and deploy community paralegals — sometimes known as “grassroots advocates” or “barefoot lawyers”. Together with the communities they serve, Namati strives to translate the lessons from this grassroots experience into positive, large-scale changes to laws and systems.
